Five signs your roadmap has too many owners

When everyone owns a goal, nobody does. Here is how to spot it and fix it.

Shared ownership sounds fair. Everyone contributes, everyone is responsible. In practice, it slows decisions and hides risks until it is too late. These five signs show it is time to change.

1. Goals list three or more owners

When a goal has several owners, each one assumes another is tracking it. Updates become rare, and nobody feels free to make the final call.

2. Status updates start with “I think”

If people guess the status of their own goal, nobody is following it closely. A clear owner knows where things stand without checking with others first.

3. Reviews end without a decision

A review should end with a choice: continue, change or stop. When every owner needs the others to agree, the decision moves to the next meeting, then the one after.

4. Work waits for approvals

Tasks pile up waiting for sign-off from people who are not blocking them. Each approval is quick, but together they add days to every step.

5. Nobody knows who to ask about a delay

When a date slips and three people point at each other, the problem is not the delay. It is the ownership.

The fix

Give every goal one owner. Others can contribute, review and challenge, but one person decides and reports progress. In Bloomline, the owner field accepts only one name for this reason.

Start with your next planning cycle. Review each goal and ask one question: if this slips, who explains it? That person is the owner.
